Church of St. Francis is a historic Roman Catholic church located in the city of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1880, St. Francis is one of Chicago's oldest churches and has served the surrounding community for more than a century. It has been a cornerstone of the city's Little Italy and continues to be a dynamic center of life for many of the area's Italian-Americans. History The original Church of St. Francis was founded in 1880, with the construction of a wooden frame church building at 650 West Harrison Street. The frame church served for more than 20 years, before it was replaced by a larger stone and brick structure designed by architect Henry Enger in 1905. The new building featured two large towers, a domed roof and several decorative touches that were uncommon in Chicago at the time. Restoration of the building, including the towers, was completed in 1985. Facts Today, the Church of St. Francis is a vibrant community hub. The pastor is Reverend Silvio Di Grazia and the Dominican nuns and Brothers of St. Francis provide spiritual and social guidance. Mass is held each weekend, with a family service on Sunday afternoons. The church's activities also include weekday services, parochial school classes, an international food pantry, and a senior citizens program.
