Church and Monastery of St. Francis History The Church and Monastery of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy, was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1209. It was the birthplace of the Franciscan order, a mendicant (begging) religious order dedicated to helping the poor and suffering. The church that stands today is a result of centuries of modifications and additions, with a major renovation in the mid-1800s.
