History:

Los Nevados National Natural Park (Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados) is located in the Colombian department of Caldas. It is one of the seven designated National Natural Parks in the country. The park was created in 1985 and partially expanded in 1995. Los Nevados encompasses an area measuring 169,639 hectares, located in two departments: Caldas and Quindío. The terrain features many volcanoes, one of the highest is the Nevado del Ruiz, the most active volcano in the nevadians massif, and a group of small lagoons. The park includes several plant life communities including montane forests, high paramos, and combinations of both. It provides habitat for more than 550 species of endemic and migratory birds, as well as a variety of mammals such as spectacled bears, miloto monkeys, and Andean pumas. The park is important for the conservation of the water supply of the Colombian capital, Bogota, and its surrounding areas since many of its rivers drain to Bogota. The park also helps protect several endangered species, serves as a refuge for biodiversity, and protects the watersheds that supply water to Bogota and other areas of Colombia. The park is managed by the Colombian Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies and is open to the public for educational, scientific, and recreational purposes.
