History:

San Francisco Church is a 17th-century Roman Catholic church in Cartagena, Colombia. Located near the center of the historic old town, it is one of the most noteworthy churches in the region. The church was built in 1620 by the Jesuits at the request of the Spanish governor of the New Granada province. Designed in the traditional Mudéjar style, it is an excellent example of the colonial architecture of the period. The church was originally dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and was given the name San Francisco. Over the years, the church has served numerous purposes. During the 18th century, it was the official parish of Cartagena and in 1798, it was home to the “Oratorio Infantil de San Francisco de Asis” which was one of South America’s first orchestra schools. Throughout the 19th century, San Francisco underwent many restoration projects. In 1886, the Spanish government granted permission to completely remodel and rebuild the church. This remodel included adding many altars, chandeliers and decorations giving it the extravagant look it has today.
