History:
Simon Bolivar Park is located in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. It is located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia along the Magdalena River. The park is named after Venezuelan revolutionary, former General of the Army, and Simon Bolivar, the main figure in the creation of the Republic of Gran Colombia (1819-1830). The park was originally created in 1893 by José Eusebio Caro. It was designed in a French-style and contained a large central lake surrounded by walkways and gardens. For several decades the park was a popular spot for locals and visitors to enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean. In the 1930s, the area was improved and re-designed by engineer Juan de la Cruz Cardona, with the addition of several ornamental fountains, a Ferris wheel, a wading pool, recreational courts and a cafeteria. Until the construction of El Malecón de Las Malvinas (a park in the center of the city) in 2008, Simon Bolivar Park served as the main leisure site for the city and was home to its annual carnival and Christmas festivities. From the 1980s until 2019, the park underwent a long period of neglect and deterioration. In 2018, the government of Barranquilla began a major restoration and renovation project, funded in part by the Inter-American Development Bank. This project included the restoration of the lake, the installation of footbridges and walkways, the reconstruction of the fountains and other features, and the construction of a new free zoo. Since the completion of the restoration project, Simon Bolivar Park has again become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
