History:

The Casa de la Moneda in Bogotá, Colombia, was originally built in 1621 as a government office, or “Casa de Oficios”. The main purpose of this office was to serve as a repository for gold and silver obtained by the colonial government. In 1650, it was taken over by the Royal Spanish Treasury. From this time until 1971, it functioned as a Spanish mint. The headquarters of the monetary system of the Viceroyalty of New Granada were located here, with activities like the manufacture and distribution of coins, provision of currency exchange services, and the storage and dispatch of silver and gold coins to other mints in the viceroyalty taking place. In 1821, Colombia declared its independence from Spain, and shortly afterwards, the Casa de la Moneda was taken over by the Colombian government, who used it as a repository for its gold and silver reserves. In 1927, the facility was redeveloped and enlarged to accommodate new functions that the Colombian government had begun to take on, such as the administration of public debt and the issuance of paper money. In 1971, the operations of the Casa de la Moneda were moved to a new facility in Bogotá, and the original building was left unused. However, in 1997, the Colombian government began restoration of the historic building, and in the same year the facility was opened as a museum. Today, the building houses exhibits on the history of Colombian and Spanish currency, as well as a library and archives with documents related to the history of Colombia’s economy and banking system.
