History:

Bolivar Park in Medellin, Colombia is a popular urban meeting place and has been since colonial times. Originally it was a tiny plaza surrounded by a few houses, but it eventually grew to the sprawling green space it is today. It was named after Simón Bolívar, the prominent historical figure that was key to the independence of Colombia. The park has been through various transformations over the years. In 1801, the Cangrejo Fountain was constructed in the southern side of the park and a campaign was also launched to light the park with lamps. The park was then destroyed to make way for Medellin's City Hall in 1908, but it was later rebuilt in 1924. It was renovated once again in 1962 and in 1978 it was declared as an historic area. Bolivar Park also experienced a period of decline between the late 1980s and early 2000s due to the increase in crime and violence connected with the drug trade in Medellin. However, in 2006 the park was given a major makeover and modernized with the help of funds from municipal, regional, and national governments. The project included the addition of several playgrounds, running tracks, basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor fitness equipment, and also the restoration of the old Cangrejo Fountain. Today, Bolivar Park continues to be one of the most important public spaces in Medellin.
