In 1814, the building was used as a mint and was given the name “Palacio de La Moneda.” When the government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, tanks surrounded the building and the new military regime used it as its headquarters. In 1983, the building was returned to the public domain and became the Palacio de la Moneda Cultural Center of which the Chilean Ministry of Culture is the primary administrator. The Palacio de la Moneda Cultural Center features both permanent and temporary exhibits presented in two large galleries as well as smaller spaces dedicated to artists' workshops and master classes.
