First settled by the indigenous Huilliches in the mid-16th century, Coquimbo was later claimed by the Spaniards in 1550 and was part of the colonization of Chile. The island of Damas, named after the Latin word for ladies, was discovered by a priest in the 17th century and given to the Virgin of Damas. The island was used by the Jesuit Mission in 1724-1730 and served as a base of operations for colonists until it was abandoned in 1740 due to the indigenous revolt against the Spanish. In the 18th century, the island of Damas served as a base of operations for the emerging commercial activity in Coquimbo. Commercial fishing, especially of the abalone, became popular and the export of these goods brought much prosperity to the region. The island also saw some activity from pirates and privateers who used it as a hideout. By the 19th and early 20th centuries, the island had become a tourist destination for the cities of Coquimbo and La Serena. In 1931, the Chilean government declared the island a natural reserve and established the first Antarctic base at the region in 1951. This base would later become the country’s first marine reserve.
