History:

The Muelle de las Almas (or Pier of Souls), located in Muelle area of Chiloé Island in Chile, is believed to have been constructed between the late 17th and mid-19th centuries, as part of the Quintillán family’s effort to create a safe harbor in order to engage in commercial fishing and trade. The pier, which is around 200 meters long, is connected to the mainland by a strip of land and is guarded by two stone watches. Originally, the pier was used to transport lumber, coal, and other products from Chiloé Island to the mainland. It also served as a safe harbor for boats, both commercial and recreational, during storms and bad weather. At its peak in the first half of the 20th century, the pier received over 56 thousand boats annually. Many of the families who lived in Muelle worked in the industries related to the activities at the pier, such as carpentry, fishing, and boat building. The pier saw a decline in activity in the mid-20th century as ships got bigger and the need for smaller fishing vessels decreased. In the 1990s, the pier underwent extensive remodeling with the addition of a swimming pool and a restaurant. Today, the Muelle de las Almas continues to be a popular spot for local families who go to the pier to enjoy the attractions, take in the sun, and go swimming.
