The Cerro de Santa Lucía is a hill in the port city of Valparaíso, Chile. It was formed from deposits of material that was brought to the coast by the Valparaíso bay and subsequently hardened with time. On the present day hill there are a series of staircases that were created by the Spanish colonial authorities to link the city below to the highlands beyond. The most prominent feature of the hill is the Complejo Cultural de Santa Lucia, an old fortification complex which was built in 1877 by the Chilean military. The structure features 2 large towers, surrounded by a castle-like wall. The complex served as an outpost for coastal defense until the 1930s when it was partially destroyed by fire. Today, the complex is one of the main tourist attractions in Valparaíso.
