History:

The Plaza de Armas of La Serena is one of the most important and in turn oldest plazas in the country, since it is recorded that it was one of the first to be built during the foundation of the city, in 1544. The plaza, initially called Plaza Mayor, was built around a church dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception and was composed, initially, of the then newly-built Church of the Immaculate Conception, later destroyed, the tradition of the Catedral de La Serena, the house of the Governor and the Captaincy of La Serena, which today are part of the colonial and republican architectural complex of the Plaza. During colonial times, in Plaza de Armas was a forum for justice, where religious and other political issues were addressed. Similarly, the plaza was the scene of important events such as May 31st, 1811, the first anniversary of the Chilean independence proclaimed in Santiago. Over the years, part of the Plaza underwent a remodeling, although the Church of the Immaculate Conception is still standing. In the center of the square is a monument to the first Chilean head of state, Gen. Bernardo O'Higgins, who is flanked by José Ignacio Cancino (hero of the independence of La Serena) and Dr. Pedro Alcántara Sanfuentes (President of the Republic in the 19th century). Today, the Plaza de Armas in La Serena is a must-see for visitors, as well as a meeting place for both local residents and tourists, who enjoy the warm climate, historical blend and offerings of nearby cafes and restaurants.
