History:
The Torres del Paine National Park region of Chile has long been home to a variety of wildlife species and an important cultural site for the members of the indigenous peoples in the area. The area has a unique combination of a dramatic landscape with various glaciers, soaring peaks, and crystal-clear lakes, in addition to being a major draw for outdoor recreational activities. It was not until the early part of the 20th century when the area was finally protected and named as a national park. In 1959, the Chilean government declared the area a national park and it has been managed by the National Forestry Corporation since then. The park is part of the Patagonian Andes, one of the world’s most important conservation sites, with various species of flora and fauna. Of particular importance to the park are the guanaco, the largest of the four species of camelids in South America; the puma, also known as the mountain lion, the third-largest of the Latin American wild cats; the huemul deer of Chile and Argentina; and the endemic Patagonian brown bear. Torres del Paine National Park is internationally recognized for its beauty and the conservation of its unique wildlife. It was declared a Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1978. It was also added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 1978 and its Lake Sarmiento was added to the list in 2016.
