History:
Signal Hill is a National Historic Site located atop a hill overlooking the city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. It has been known historically as a gathering place for merchants and fishermen since the 16th century. In 1610, the area was used by the fishermen and merchant community as a signaling system where fires would be lit on the hill to alert fishermen of important weather and fishing news. In 1702, a signal station was built on the hill which was used for flag signals and warnings from the surrounding battery forts. In 1762, construction began to build a signal tower atop the hill. This tower, strategically located, allowed flags to be flown from the hill that could be seen by ships passing by. In 1815, Signal Hill was declared a National Historic Site and in 1965, it was named a National Historic Site of Canada.
