History:

Rio Negro Palace is a grand hotel situated in Manaus, a major Amazonian city in the heart of Brazil. It is one of the largest and most prestigious hotels in the area and has a long and illustrious history. The property originally opened in 1904, when the Amazon skyline was still dominated by mud houses and makeshift rafts. Initially, the Rio Negro Palace functioned as what was then known as a ‘pharmacy hotel’, offering both medical attention and accommodations. Since then, it has been extended many times until, by 1929, it had grown into a two-storey building. In the late 1920s, local businessman Octavio Gonçalves decided to invest in the building and transform it into the luxurious hotel we know today. The name was changed to Hotel Rio Negro Palace and the glamourous design featured grand high ceilings, polished wooden floors and fine leather upholstery. The hotel remained popular with Manaus’s elite, who would often stay for months at a time. During the 1940s, the hotel experienced a decline in popularity, with some of its most beloved features being destroyed during various renovations. However, it regained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, becoming an attractive destination once again. During the 2000s, the hotel went through yet another renovation, this time from its once-glamorous state into a modern, contemporary space. This included the addition of a swimming pool, sauna, and spa. The hotel also began hosting events such as conferences and conventions, becoming a popular tourist destination. Today, the Rio Negro Palace remains one of the most beloved and famous buildings in Manaus. With its long and illustrious past, it is a stunning reminder of the city’s rich history and culture.
