The Teatro Amazonas, or Amazon Theater, is a neoclassical opera house located in Manaus, capital of the Brazilian Amazonas state. It is situated on the Praça Sao Sebastião (Sao Sebastiao Square) in the city's historic center. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1987. The theater was the idea of Manaus mayor Eduardo Ribeiro and was built between 1881 and 1896 by a collection of Brazilian and European architects and engineers, funded by the great rubber boom of the end of the 19th century. The facade and the interior of the theater are a combination of Italian Renaissance style, together with some Art Nouveau elements. The Amazon Theater has hosted many of the greatest names in international classical music, from the Teatro alla Scala's opera company to conductors such as Car Toscanini and Arturo Toscanini, Sir Thomas Beecham, Willem Mengelberg, and Herbert Von Karajan.
