Marco Zero served as a market center during the Colonial Age, and was the public gathering place during the times of the Dutch Colony, from 1630 to 1654. The site was also used for a number of public ceremonies and events such as coronation ceremonies, executions, and the announcement of war and peace declarations. In the 19th century, Marco Zero saw the installation of the famous Lighthouse of Recife, which is still the highest structure in Recife, standing at 56 meters. In 1837, the statue of the Indigenous Warrior was also erected in the square, which became a symbol of liberation and independence. The square was then renovated in 1996 and today it is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.
