History:

The Jardim Botânico, Rio de Janeiro is a botanical garden located near the city center of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The garden's original mission was to collect and classify the region's native plants and to catalog them as a reference for scientists, but it has evolved over the years to include an extensive horticultural display and several research laboratories. The garden was established in the early 19th century by Johann Baptist Ritter von Martius, tasked with the duty of collecting and classifying the flora of Brazil. Martius had already traveled extensively throughout Brazil while creating a botanical collection while in residence as Minister Plenipotentiary of Austria to the Imperial Court of Brazil. In 1808, Martius was recalled to Vienna, so the initial task of locating and collecting plants in the area fell on João Carl Wilhelm Schlecter, a noted botonite from Germany who was then serving as Imperial Botanist. In 1818, Schlecter laid out a plan for the establishment of a botanical garden and in 1822, by Imperial Decree, the first Jardim Botânico was opened in Rio de Janeiro. The garden underwent many changes over the course of the 19th and early 20th century, most notably a major renovation in the early 1890s. The main entrance was moved to the newly constructed Praca do Lago, an ornate neoclassical square designed by Francisco de Oliveira Passos, which following World War II became the modernized Praça Santos Dumont. In 1955, the Jardim Botânico was declared a Historic, Cultural, and Patrimonial Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Since then, the garden has continued to thrive and serve as a major destination for visitors. Visit one of the famous monuments of Brazil with your friends and family.
