History:

Bonito is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, about 250km to the west of the state capital, Campo Grande. Its prehistoric origins date back to at least 5,000 years ago when the area was first colonized by a group of hunter-gatherers known as the Pankuív. These indigenous people eventually became known as the Guarani, and the language they spoke was spoken in the region until it was supplanted by the official language of Brazil, Portuguese, in the mid-18th century. In 1813, the Portuguese Crown granted the region to the Jesuits who set up a mission in the nearby village of Rio da Prata. A small settlement soon grew and began to attract Brazilian settlers from the south. By the late 19th century, the population had grown to approximately 20,000 inhabitants. The settlement had grown up around the Santa Rosa School – founded in 1896 by ex-slaves – and was renamed Bonito in 1901. The town expanded rapidly during the early 20th century due to a boom in the agricultural industry, with coffee, corn, and sugarcane being among the main crops produced. In the 1950s, the newly constructed Rodovia BR-267 connected the town to major cities, and Bonito began to develop a vibrant tourism industry that has grown to become the region's main economic sector today. Bonito has since become a major tourist hotspot, attracting visitors from all over the world thanks to its abundance of natural attractions, such as the Rio Formoso and the Gruta do Lago Azul. The area is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, with the abundance of wildlife in the area making it particularly popular for eco-tourism. Bonito is also a renowned adventure tourism destination, offering visitors the chance to explore its numerous caves and swim in the crystal clear rivers and springs.
