: Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is a national protected area in Brazil. History:

The Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (CNPV) is a protected area located in the Brazilian Cerrado biome and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. It remains an intact example of a highly threatened upland Cerrado landscape, as well as the largest area of protected Cerrado left in Brazil. The Changle river divides the area forming the Serra de São Miguel on the north, which belongs to the São Marcos/Icem River valley drainage system, and the Serra Verde on the south, which belongs to the Goiás River valley. The park's highest point is Boa Vista (1,902m). The area was part of the possessions of D. Isabel da Cunha Mattos, wife of Colonel Manoel de Paiva Mattos, whose family claimed possession of 131,000 hectares, distributed over most of the states of Goiás and Distrito Federal. In 1930, it became an environmental protection area, and in 1961 and 1970 rights of possession were granted to Adelino Mattos and Pouso Alegre Farm. In 1962 Captain Lúcio Giudice raised attempts to create a protected area that would later become CNPV. Public outcry ensued, extending beyond the borders of Goiás and Distrito Federal and gaining support from other states and countries. The creation of the park became a milestone in the history of the conservation of Brazilian environments. On June 16th, 1961, Decree 25524 was sanctioned, transforming CNPV into a Permanent Reservoir of Natural Resources. Between 1980 and 1982, due to overexploitation from charcoal producers, the park was almost completely destroyed. Finally, on January 19th, 1990, the area became fully protected after the official permission of the Brazilian Federal Government. Since then, major efforts have been made to restore the ecology of the region and to promote eco-tourism activities.
