History:

Vallegrande is a municipality in Bolivia located in the province of Vallegrande, in the department of Santa Cruz. It is located in the central part of the country between the Amazon and Chaco plains at an altitude of 1,100 metres (3,600 ft). The municipality is named after Chief Vallegrande, a leader of the local Native American tribe of the region. In 1542, the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Anzures arrived in Vallegrande and named this region "Vallegrande" in honor of Chief Vallegrande. Vallegrande became a major transit point for travelers during the 18th and 19th centuries. During the 20th century, the area experienced significant agricultural and economic growth with the introduction of rubber tapping and cocoa production. In the 1960s, Vallegrande underwent an economic and urban boom with the construction of the Vallegrande–Santa Cruz railway, connecting Vallegrande to the rest of Bolivia. Today, Vallegrande is a popular tourist destination with a variety of activities such as horseback riding, river rafting, hot air ballooning and cultural attractions including the Museum of Chief Vallegrande and the Nuestro Señor de la Piedra Church.
