Che Guevara Mausoleum in Bolivia is a memorial built to honor the Argentine-Cuban revolutionary and guerrilla leader, Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Mural of Che Guevara: Located outside the mausoleum, this large mural depicts Che Guevara in a mid-action pose. It was created by the artist Gustavo Charatin in 1997. 6. Plaza "Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara": Located outside the mausoleum, this plaza pays tribute to the life and beliefs of Che Guevara. The Che Guevara Mausoleum in Bolivia is a memorial to the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. The site was built and opened in 1997, located in the small town of Vallegrande in Bolivia's Santa Cruz Department. It houses the remains of Che Guevara, as well as of the guerrilla comrades who died alongside him in 1967 in Bolivia, after being located in secret for over 30 years. Che Guevara had visited Bolivia in the early 1960's, during his famous guerrilla tour of Latin America, during which he sought to spread revolution throughout the region. He returned to Bolivia in 1966 to lead a guerrilla insurgency, with the aim of toppling the government and installing a revolutionary regime in Bolivia. The guerrilla movement failed, and in October 1967 Che Guevara was captured near the town of Vallegrande. He was summarily executed and buried in an unmarked grave in the town. Che Guevara's remains were not located until 1997, when a group of Cuban scholars, in conjunction with Bolivian cultural and scientific organisations, discovered and excavated the grave. His remains were brought to Havana, where they were identified in an extensive scientific process and ceremoniously buried at the Che Guevara Mausoleum. The Che Guevara Mausoleum is visited by lovers of Che Guevara, by revolutionaries, and by dignitaries from around the world. The site is home to a permanent exhibition on Che Guevara's life and works, and includes personal relics, documents, photographs, films, and multimedia displays. It is owned and maintained by the Cuban government, and overseen by the National Institute of Revolutionaries of Che Guevara.
