History:

The district of Cayo began to be populated by small Mayan villages around 1000-1200 AD. After the Spanish conquest these villages were abandoned, but re-populated by 1800 and became the main producers of food in Belize. During this time, the district was divided amongst a few Spanish landowners. In the late 1800s the population of the district began to grow due to the influx of immigrants from Europe and the United States. These immigrants had come in search of work in the lumber, gold, and diamond industries. It was during this time that the village of Buenavista del Cayo was founded as a company town by the British Honduras Company. This village was later incorporated into the district of Cayo in 1953. Today, Buenavista del Cayo is a vibrant community with a wide variety of educational and recreational activities. It is home to a number of small businesses, restaurants, and lodging establishments. Buenavista del Cayo is an important part of the larger Cayo district and provides many services for residents and visitors alike.
