The history of Sovetskaya Street in Grodno, Belarus dates back to the 17th century, and is one of the oldest streets in Grodno. Initially, it was called Knyaz-Vladimirskaya and then Begichevaya Street (from the name of one of the owners in the 17th century, Afanasy Naletovich Begichev). From 1779 to 1919, it was called Alexander Nevsky Street and in 1919, it was renamed Sovetskaya Street. During the 19th century, Sovetskaya Street was home to a number of important sites, including two primary schools, an industrial school, a Jewish school, and Jewish markets. In 1903, a training school for teachers was opened at the corner of Sovetskaya Street and Michalovichi Street. In the early 20th century, Sovetskaya Street was a major route for international tour buses to visit Grodno and nearby towns like Camise and Konyetz. From 1929 to 1941, the Torgovoi Rynok, or Grodno market was located on Sovetskaya Street. During WWII, a memorial was erected on the street in memory of those who perished in the war. In the post-war period, Sovetskaya Street was known for its many stores, restaurants, cafes, and pubs. The street was also known for its distinct architecture, with many of its buildings exhibiting a combination of Soviet, Baroque, and Classicist styles.
