History:

Sovetskaya Square is located in Minsk, Belarus and is one of the most iconic public squares in the city. It is located in the central part of the city, adjacent to the headquarters of the Belarusian government. The square is especially known for its memorial to the Great Patriotic War, the monument dedicated to the Heroes of the Soviet Union. The area was originally designated as a public square during the 19th century, and in 1927 work began to expand the square and create a grandiose monument to commemorate the then-monumental victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War. The expansion project was completed in 1939, and the project included an extension of Sovetskaya Square, which at the time was only 40 meters in area. The memorial to the Great Patriotic War was built in 1941 and was designed by local sculptor Iosif Rakhlev. The monument consists of a life-size stormtrooper sculpture with two soldiers, a pilot, and a soldier with a machine gun. The statue is set upon a pedestal, which is decorated with bas-reliefs of fighter pilots, Soviet soldiers, and a female factory worker carrying a hammer and sickle. In 1962, a central fountain was added to the square as part of a major redevelopment and refurbishment project, which also included the replanting of the trees surrounding the square as well as the addition of decorative lighting and benches. This redevelopment was overseen by architect I.M. Klimisch, and the promenade along Sovetskaya Square still exists today. The square has since become an important public square in Minsk, and is used as a place for public demonstrations and political rallies.
