History:
Vitebsk Art Museum was founded in 1848 by the prominent Russian writer, artist, and art collector, Nikolai Alekseevich Grebnev. Grebnev opened the museum in an old chapel of the Vitebsk Hospital and it was the first museum in Belarus. He also collected the majority of his works for the museum, some of which have survived to this day. After Grebnev’s death in 1849, the museum was abandoned and its contents put into storage. In the early 1900s, the family of the famous Russian and Belarusian painter, Marc Chagall, came back to Vitebsk to take over the management of the museum. They managed it until 1934, when a committee to manage and oversee the museum was appointed. The museum was moved around Vitebsk numerous times throughout its history, until finally settling down in its current location in 1973. The museum holds a large variety of artwork from different eras and countries, including works by local and global artists. It holds over 30,000 works from Belarusian and international masters such as Marc Chagall, Kazimir Malevich, Rembrandt van Rijn, and many others.
