History:

The Minsk City Hall, or popularly known as the White House, is one of the landmarks of Minsk, Belarus. It was founded in 1540 during the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Initially, City Hall was a wooden building, which was destroyed during the 17th century. The new City Hall was built in 1738. In the 19th century, a red brick building was constructed, inspired by classical architecture. In 1905, the City Hall was reconstructed and expanded, with a larger facade and adding a tall tower, designed by the famous Belarusian architect, Pavel Shreider. The Soviet Union took over Belarus in 1918 and the City Hall was used to house Soviet government institutions. The name "White House" was given to the building during the late Soviet period. After Belarus regained its independence in 1991, the Minsk City Hall was used for public services like housing offices, the police office, educational institutions, and a post office. In 2013, the building was restored and a new clock was installed. Currently, the City Hall is an important cultural and historical landmark of Minsk and is open to the public for tours.
