History:

Kupalovsky Theatre, located in Minsk, Belarus, is a state theatre and the largest performing theatre in the Republic of Belarus. It was founded in 1895 by Kaspars Kupalovs, the famous Belarusian playwright, actor, director, theatre critic and greatest enthusiast of theatrical life in the country. The theatre’s first home was in a house opposite City Hall Square in Minsk and was well-known for the production of plays written by Kupalovs himself. After the death of Kupalovs in 1908, the theatre began to focus on new contemporary plays, in a melancholic style appreciated by many of the theatre's regular visitors. In 1911 the theatre moved to a new building, built from wooden panels, where it eventually became a landlord theatre. Between 1913 and 1967 it developed into Belarus's most advanced experimental theatre, hosting high-profile foreign productions. The building was damaged during World War II and the theatre was eventually restored to its original form in 1951. During the Soviet period, the theatre's former landlord status was replaced by the governmental People's Theatre and the Kupalovsky Theatre was reorganized as the Drama Theatre of Belarus. Since its beginning, Kupalovsky Theatre has actively participated in the international theatre festivals, were it’s won numerous awards, and has become one of the leading houses of performing theatre in Belarus. With its versatile repertoire from the classical text, to contemporary drama and modern adaptations of works by famous authors such as Pushkin, Lermontov, Ostrovsky, and Chekhov, it has become a town’s favourite and guarantees a successful evening.
