History:

Codrington Windmill is the remains of a three-storey windmill built in 1814 on the estate of Codrington Plantation, located near the town of Saint John in Barbados. The windmill was owned and operated by George Cockerell, who used it to grind his crop of sugar into sugarcane. The building was erected in an attractive French colonial style and the original sails were made from cypress sapwood, which had to be replaced a number of times over the years due to rot and decay. Although initially powered by three sails the mill was eventually equipped with a seventh sail, making it the largest in Barbados. Codrington Windmill ceased operation in the late nineteenth century and was abandoned in 1900. In the early 1990s the windmill was restored and turned into a functioning museum by the Barbados National Trust. The building is now open to the public and is listed as a National Monument. The Codrington Windmill is a testament to the role windmills played in the growth of the sugar industry in Barbados in the 18th and 19th century and is an important part of Barbados' history.
