Thehistory of the area now known as Brighton Beach dates back to the mid-19th century. The first settlers to the area were British soldiers, who received land grants for service in the Barbados Militia. As the area grew, small communities developed, with a fishing industry becoming the main source of income. Brighton Beach was officially named in 1883, when the British government began constructing a breakwater along the coast. By 1886, the breakwater was completed, and a road was built from the beach up to Bridgetown. This attracted tourists and resulted in significant growth in the area. The area saw a surge in development in the early part of the 20th century, and by the late 1920s, several luxury hotels and resorts had been built along the beach. This development continued until World War II. During the war, Brighton Beach was used as antiaircraft posts, and the army built a number of gun emplacements in the area. Following the war, the area reverted back to a tourist destination and by the 1970s, Brighton Beach had once again become popular with tourists. Today, Brighton Beach is home to several resorts, restaurants and bars, as well as numerous residential properties.
