In the early 17th century Sir William Courtenay, Governor of Barbados, proposed that a permanent place for Christian worship be constructed. The land was given by Mr. Richard Bromely and the construction of the church wasfully completed in 1645. Over the centuries, the church has been modified and rebuilt, most recently in 1830. The church's spire was structured in 1720 and shortly afterwards a clock was added, making it the island’s first public clock. In the 1960s, having been out of use for some time, the church was restored and it remains a cherished part of the Barbadian heritage today. The church is home to numerous artifacts and treasures. Among the most notable are the anciently engraved Royal Arms of King Charles II, its old chandeliers, an ancient baptismal font, an historic organ and an elaborately carved reredos. It is also said that a corpse was found buried inside a wall several years ago, leading to speculation that it could have been that of a highwayman or clergyman from the 1800s. Today, Saint Andrew Parish Church continues to offer spiritual guidance to its members and provides diverse services such as Sunday school, Bible study and prayer workshops, family care, music ministry and small groups. Its congregation is a mix of expats, locals and visitors. Although no longer a functioning parish, the church is still active and makes significant contributions to Barbados's cultural and religious heritage.
