The Gafargaon Jame Mosque, located in the town of Gafargaon in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh, is an example of a classic example of the Sultanate period in Bengal. The mosque is a large two-storey brick building with a single domed structure on its top. The lower storey of the mosque is a rectangular hall, divided into seven bays or parts by eight plain curved pillars. The first bay or the central one is the largest of all and has a large mihrab or arch employed for commencing the prayer. The upper storey has three cupolas and is supported by four more pillars at the corners. The exterior of the mosque is decorated with Bengali terracotta flower, foliage and geometric designs. The entrance to the mosque, on the east side, has a small veranda protected by a small sloping rooftop. The mosque also has two smaller side wings on the east and west sides. The interior of the mosque is adorned with beautiful stone carvings and terrazzo paintings on the walls. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
