: The Chittagong Central Jame Mosque is a major mosque located in the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh. It was first built in 1666 and is the last surviving Mughal relic in the city. The mosque combines the Islamic style of architecture with the Hindu style of design. Its central dome is a large round-arched structure that stands on a platform, supported by four slender supporting towers, topped with six cupolas. The overall structure is two-storeyed, and is built with terracotta and traditional brick. The eastern facade of the Chittagong Central Jame Mosque is dominated by a large, three-tiered arched gateway, the Asad Gate. It is flanked with two minarets and its entrance is adorned with intricate carvings and glazed tile-work. The imposing entrance gate gives way to a large prayer hall with a grand chhala, or elevated platform, adorned with intricate stonework. Descending from the main platform, a grand staircase leads to the main prayer hall, which is divided into two sections by an imposing chhala wall. The chhala is pierced with archways and niches, decorated with ornamental stone carvings. The prayer hall is surrounded on all sides by a number of small chambers and verandas, which provide a cool and refreshing environment to offer prayers. The covered chambers are adorned with glazed tiles on the ceiling and intricate carvings on the walls. The mosque is also dotted with several sets of domes, which are topped with the traditional lotus finials. The Chittagong Central Jame Mosque also features a large circular fountain in the centre of its courtyard, which is a popular spot amongst worshippers and visitors alike. The Chittagong Central Jame Mosque is an important example of the traditional architectural style of the Mughal era, and an important religious site in the country.
