History:
Busaiteen is a small coastal town located in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Historically, Busaiteen has been a coastal fishing village since the 19th century. The village's name is derived from the Arabic root word “busaiteen” which translates to “reed”, as reeds once covered the shoreline of Busaiteen. During the 19th century, the majority of its inhabitants were fishermen and pearl merchants. In the early 20th century, Busaiteen became a major port and trade center. Ships from neighboring countries, such as Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, would visit it to trade fish, pearls, and other goods. During World War II, Busaiteen was used as a British naval base and was well-known by the locals as the site of a local RAF airbase. Shortly after achieving independence in 1971, the government of Bahrain began an extensive refurbishment project in Busaiteen. Busaiteen coast gained more attention as a tourist attraction in the 1990s when the government began to build infrastructure and improve the environment in order to attract more visitors. They added roads and a seafront promenade, and built several tourist facilities in Busaiteen, such as hotels and restaurants. Today, Busaiteen is a popular tourist destination with some of the city’s landmarks, such as the Al Areen Wetlands, the Bahrain World Trade Center, and the National Museum of Bahrain.
