The history of Bahrain International Airport stretches back to 1932 when RAF Muharraq opened as a Royal Air Force base. It was initially used for reconnaissance missions against Iraq and in the early 1930s, as a staging post for planes en route from the United Kingdom to India. During World War II, the airfield was used for flights to India. In 1973, His Majesty the late Amir Sheikh Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifa proposed the establishment of an international airport. The airport began operations in 1974 and was originally referred to as Bahrain International Airport. In 1997, the facility was rebranded as Bahrain International Airport, Muharraq, in honor of the Village of Muharraq, which is nearby. The airport has continually expanded over the years, and today it is one of the largest airfields in the Middle East. It serves over 25 million passengers per year and has a capacity of over 50 million passengers. The airport has two terminals, with the new Terminal 1 serving as the main hub for international and regional services. Airport facilities include a Duty Free shopping centre, Executive Lounges, and a range of high-end restaurants.
