Brief History:
Balakan Juma Mosque is one of the oldest surviving mosques in Azerbaijan. It was built in the 15th century by the Khan of Balakan, and is located in the city of Balakan, which is in the northeastern region of Azerbaijan. This mosque is one of the largest mosques in the Caucasus and was built as an architectural monument. It is a large three-aisled mosque, with two minarets, a courtyard, and a tall ornate dome. It has a strong visual impact due to the brickwork embellished with alternating bands of blue and white bricks. The mosque has exerted a strong influence on the region since its construction. It has served as a place of worship for Muslims, as well as a cultural center for the region. During the Soviet period, it was closed, but was reopened in 1997 with the support of the Balakan District government. Since then, the mosque has been fully restored and is now a popular tourist attraction. It is one of the most famous mosque in Azerbaijan which you must visit.
Architecture:
The architecture of the Balakan Juma Mosque in Azerbaijan is of traditional Islamic design, consisting of a main hall with a central apse, an open to the sky courtyard, lateral spaces and two minarets. The mosque's interior has multiple domes, with rich decoration in the form of blue and green Islamic tiles. The overall dimensions of the building are approximately 77x49m and it has a capacity of around 1,000 worshippers. The main hall contains a carved mahogany mihrab and minbar, while the entire mosque is beautified by stucco and decorative plasterwork featuring a range of geometric and floral designs. The mosque also contains a library and a madrasa (religious school). This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
