Balakan Juma Mosque is one of the oldest surviving mosques in Azerbaijan. It was built in the 15th century by the Khan of Balakan, and is located in the city of Balakan, which is in the northeastern region of Azerbaijan. This mosque is one of the largest mosques in the Caucasus and was built as an architectural monument. It is a large three-aisled mosque, with two minarets, a courtyard, and a tall ornate dome. It has a strong visual impact due to the brickwork embellished with alternating bands of blue and white bricks. The mosque has exerted a strong influence on the region since its construction. It has served as a place of worship for Muslims, as well as a cultural center for the region. During the Soviet period, it was closed, but was reopened in 1997 with the support of the Balakan District government. The main hall contains a carved mahogany mihrab and minbar, while the entire mosque is beautified by stucco and decorative plasterwork featuring a range of geometric and floral designs. The mosque also contains a library and a madrasa (religious school). This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
