History:
Schloss Hellbrunn, a castle estate located in Salzburg, Austria, has a rich and varied history that dates back to the 15th century. It was originally owned by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. He had the castle built in 1613 as a summer residence and hunting lodge. The castle was lavishly decorated and filled with works of art, making it one of the most impressive and luxurious residences of the time. In 1730, the castle passed into the hands of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg and was expanded over the next several decades. The notable additions included formal gardens, a pleasure palace, and a zoo. Throughout this time, gatherings, hunting parties, theatrical productions, and masquerades were held at the castle. In 1803, the Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach sold the castle to a private owner, Johann Ernst Gunther of Thurn und Taxis. For the next several decades, the Gunther family continued to expand and improve the castle and its grounds. In 1848, the Gunthers organized a lavish celebration at Schloss Hellbrunn marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of Salzburg. In 1892, the castle was purchased by the city of Salzburg and opened to the public as a tourist attraction. Since then, much of the original artwork and decoration has been restored and preserved. Today, visitors can explore the gardens and castle grounds, as well as view the hidden water fountains, which date back to Wolf Dietrich’s time. Schloss Hellbrunn is also now home to a museum and is one of the most popular attractions in Salzburg. Visit one of the famous monuments of Austria with your friends and family.
