History:

Salzburg Schloss Hellbrunn was originally built as an estate in the early 17th century. Its name translates as “Beautiful Fountain” and was once the summer home of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. Built using the Baroque style, it was designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and was completed in 1615. The Schloss has a number of attractions, including an extensive system of water features and gardens, a zoo, hedge mazes, architectural features and a theatre. The gardens surrounding the Schloss are particularly impressive, with their intricate layouts and variety of plants and flowers. In October 1944, the Schloss was bombed during World War II. After the war it was restored and opened to the public in May 1956. It is now owned by the State of Salzburg and is used as a museum and cultural centre.
