History:

The city of Salzburg in Austria has a long and storied history that has seen the city grow from its origins as a Celtic settlement to the internationally renowned cultural centre that it is today. The earliest evidence of human habitation in the area dates back to around 500BC when a Celtic settlement was established. The settlement was located along the banks of the Salzach River and was used as a trading post. In 15 BC the Roman Empire established the city of Iuvavum (or Juvavum) and it quickly became an important trading centre and strategic fort. The city underwent a major expansion at this time and many of its current monuments date from this period. In 743 AD, Juvavum came under the control of the Bavarian dukes, who named the area Salzburg and gave it its current name. This marked the beginning of the city’s Christianization as well as its transformation into an important religious centre, especially during the Baroque period in the 16th-18th centuries. This period also saw the construction of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks such as the Salzburg Cathedral and various churches and palaces. In 1816, Salzburg was annexed by the Austrian Empire where it served as an important cultural and political centre, culminating in the formation of Salzburg’s first university in 1622. During the 19th century, Salzburg’s economy was largely dependent on mining and manufacturing and the city's population swelled as Salzburg became a major industrial centre. Salzburg was heavily damaged by Allied bombing campaigns during World War II and it took considerable time and effort to restore the city’s monuments and landmarks.
