The Salzburg Mirabellgarten is one of the most famous parks in Salzburg, Austria. It is a park located on the banks of the Salzach river and is a popular tourist attraction for its historic buildings, fountains and sculptures. The Mirabellgarten was originally created in 1690 for Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau when he commissioned an Italian Baroque garden designed by court architect Santino Solari. It was meant to be a celebration of exotic Mediterranean culture and to boost the prosperity of the princely residence. The park continued to be a popular summer destination until 1820 when the archbishopric was dissolved and the park became a public park. In 1826, an extension of the park was completed to make it more attractive to tourists, and the buildings in the area were remodeled and restored. The gardens are laid out in four sections: the ‘Zwinger’, the palace, the ‘Terrassen’ and the ornamental gardens. The Zwinger is a Baroque style pavilion surrounded by a wall built in 1690. Within it is a 35 hectare garden which includes several water features, an artificial grotto and an artificial lake. The palace, which is the most well-known feature of the gardens, was built between 1606 and 1613 and has become a symbol of Salzburg.
