History:

Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna is an exhibition hall in Vienna, Austria, that hosts temporary contemporary exhibitions from all over the world. Established in 1992, the hall is housed in the former Imperial Stables and is part of the MuseumsQuartier, a larger cultural center in the center of Vienna. It is dedicated to contemporary art and has become a specialized center for large-scale international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, design, photography, video, and performance art. Before becoming Kunsthalle Wien, the building was first used for the imperial stables of the Imperial Court of Vienna. It initially served as a parade ground for the Habsburg Court, with stables stretching in rows of six or eight. In the 19th century, it was used as storage space, and then as a munitions depot during World War I. In the 1950s, the building was used as a tram depot and from the 1970s until 1992, it housed the prestigious Vienna Documentary and Film Archive. In the early 1990s, the City of Vienna developed a concept for renewing the museum district and included Kunsthalle Wien in its plans. In 1992, Kunsthalle Wien opened its doors with an exhibition entitled "The Agitated Image", which presented works from the collection of German art dealer Peter Diemer. Currently, Kunsthalle Wien is managed by the MuseumsQuartier, the same organization which directs the nearby Leopold Museum and the Museum of Applied Arts. Since its opening, Kunsthalle Wien has hosted many acclaimed exhibitions, including a solo show of ViennaActionism artist Rudolf Schwarzkogler in 1993, a survey of American pop art from the 1950s in 1997, and a retrospective dedicated to German painter Albert Oehlen in 2010.
