Mayravank In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services

Mayravank is an ancient monastery complex located in the province of Gegharkunik, in the northern part of Armenia. The complex dates back to the sixth century, during the period of early Christian monasticism. It includes two churches, a chapel, and a residential building which were constructed in the tenth and twelfth centuries. The complex was also the site of a monastery devoted to study and worship of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is one of the best churches in Armenia which you must visit.

History:

Mayravank was first established as a monastery in the sixth century by Stepanos Syunetsi. The complex was reconstructed again during the tenth century and a chapel was added. In the twelfth century, a residential building was constructed to accommodate pilgrims and monks. The monastery was further expanded during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. In the nineteenth century, Mayravank was abandoned and fell into ruin. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Armenia.

Mayravank was constructed in an area surrounded by rocky cliffs. The two churches of Mayravank, Surb Astvatsatsin and Surb Karapet, were both built in the tenth century and feature stone masonry and khachkar (cross-stone) decorations. Many of the decorations and inscriptions in the churches were carved by two prominent Armenian carvers, Momik and Sargis. The chapel of Mayravank is located just outside the entrance. It is believed to have been constructed in the thirteenth century.
