Zvartnots Cathedral In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services

Zvartnots Cathedral is located in the town of Vagharshapat in Armenia’s Armavir Province. It was built from 642 to 661 during the reign of Catholicos Nerses III (628–641). Constructed in the shape of a three-tier cross, it is a distinctive example of Armenian architecture. Zvartnots was a religious and cultural seat of power, the site of numerous important ceremonies and the repository of the state’s finest treasures and manuscripts. Unfortunately, the cathedral was badly damaged in a devastating earthquake in 930, and all that remains today are the ruins. Today, the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral are preserved as a monument by the government of Armenia. The ruins have been restored, and visitors may explore the site, which includes an excellent museum. The structure is also the venue for special holiday ceremonies and events, such as the Easter service held annually at Easter Sunday, and an Armenian Christmas service held on January 6. Visitors may also take advantage of guided tours offered by the Zvartnots Cathedral Museum.
