History:

The Museum of Antigua-and-Barbuda is a museum on the Caribbean island of Antigua-and-Barbuda. It was established in 1969 when English Major C. F. Roett opened the Antigua Historical and Archaeological Society Museum. The museum originally featured a collection of artifacts related to the local history and culture of the twin-island nation, including Arawak and colonial-era artifacts. The museum was relocated in 1975 to a new building in the city of St. John’s, nearby the Parliament Buildings. The new Museum of Antigua-and-Barbuda opened in 1986. This building was specially designed and dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of historical and archeological material dating to the pre-historic, Arawak, colonial and contemporary periods. The Museum houses a vast collection of exhibits including furniture, clothing, maps, pottery, photographs, books and documents symbolic of the Island’s rich culture and history. A centerpiece of the museum is the 1954 statue of V.C. Bird- the first Prime Minister of the nation. The Museum also hosts rotating exhibitions and occasional talks highlighting local artists and the Antiguan diaspora.
