History:
The Morris Bay area of Antigua-and-Barbuda has a rich history that dates back to the Pre-Columbian era. The Amerindian people of this area were known as the Arawaks and the Caribs, and their presence is evidenced by the many artifacts they left behind, such as pottery, shell and stone tools, and fish hooks. In the late 16th century, the British colonised Antigua-and-Barbuda, and Morris Bay became the first port of entry for the island. A small town developed near the beach - the settlement was known as Wyndham Port. Colonists from Britain and other nearby islands, such as St Kitts, began to settle the area, fishing the waters and trading in produce and slaves. In 1872, a railway line was constructed that connected the major area ports of Morris Bay with St Johns, Antigua's capital. This connection allowed for the development of a larger fishing and trading industry. As the area became more prosperous, new infrastructure, stores and homes were built. The Morris Bay area also became a haven for vacationers from North American and Europe. Hotels, restaurants and other lavish vacation spots were opened, from rustic villas to luxurious resorts. Today, Morris Bay remains a popular destination for tourists, and remains one of the most picturesque locations in the Caribbean.
