History:

King Zog I's Palace in Tirana, Albania, was built in 1931 by King Zog I (Ahmed Bey Zogolli), who ruled Albania from 1928 to 1939. It was built on the site of an existing Ottoman-era palace, which had been used by the Albanian royals for generations. King Zog wanted to make a grand statement and so the new palace was built by renowned Italian architect Gherardo Bosio who had designed many public and governmental buildings in Rome. The palace was constructed in a Neoclassical style and was much more ornate and grand than other buildings in the city. It included a grand library, ballroom, and a chamber dedicated to King Zog's hobbies, including hunting and astronomy. A visitors' book was maintained at the palace to record high-profile visitors from around the world. The building was damaged and looted during World War II and became a state-owned pantry for grain and dried food. After the fall of communism in the early 1990s, it was remodeled and is now used for various cultural activities, including governmental receptions, poetry readings, and art exhibitions. As part of the restoration process, the palace was surrounded with a park adorned with sculptures and fountains. It also serves as a museum that chronicles the history of King Zog I and Albania.
