What is The Statue of Liberty?

The proposal to construct this famous monument was presented for the first time in 1875, however, the construction actually started a year after the proposal in 1876. Lady Liberty Statue is designed by Frederick Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel (the one who constructed the Eiffel Tower in France). On October 28, 1886, the famous Statue of Liberty was designated as a national monument.

2. Copper is the actual color of The Statue of Liberty as it was built using copper and iron. But due to natural oxidization and climatic changes, it has now been turned into a greenish-blue color. It is believed that the color has now been completely oxidized and will no longer change further.

3. The Statue of Liberty was brought to New York on a French steamer named Isère on June 17, 1885. The 350 dismantled pieces of The Statue of Liberty are packed in 214 crates for safe transfer.




4. It took around 4 months to reassemble the dismantled pieces of the Statue and construct it back to its original form.

5. The Statue of Liberty is not the actual name of this famous sculpture. It was officially named “Liberty Enlightening the World” which is provided by its designer Auguste Bartholdi. But to simplify its pronunciation, it was later changed to “Statue of Liberty”.

6. The former name of Liberty Island (the place where the Statue is presently located) is Bedloe Island. It was renamed Liberty Island in 1956.

8. Around 27.22 tonnes of copper were used in the construction of The Statue of Liberty.

9. Arm and torch of the Lady Liberty reached New York in 1876 (10 years before the arrival of the complete body). It was exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia to start the fundraising campaign for the construction of the rest of the body.




10. The torch held by the Lady Liberty was once used as an observation deck and tourists are allowed to visit the torch to witness the skyline view of the city. However, after the bombardment happened in 1916 the arm of the sculpture gets damaged, consequently, the entry of visitors inside the Statue is completely closed considering the safety.

11. Among several facts, there is a creepy fact about The Statue of Liberty stating that Crowdfunding was done back in 1882 to collect funds for the construction of this popular monument. This was the first crowdfunding ever done in the history of the world and 120,000 donors join this funding campaign among which 80% are middle class.

12. As per The Statue of Liberty size facts, the actual weight of the iconic Statue of Liberty is around 225 tons. Also, the further measurement of Lady Liberty includes its height, which is 305 feet, 6 inches from the base to the torch, and 2.4 mm thick copper sheets are used to design the outer shell of the Statue.

14. A destructive hurricane did numerous damages to the Statue as well as to the Superintendent’s house built on the island after which the monument remains closed for around 8 months. The park and the Statue remain closed to visitors from November 8, 2012, until July 4, 2013.




15. There is a total of 354 stairs from the pedestal to the crown of the Liberty Queen, which was open till the hurricane of 2012. 

16. The torch held by Lady Liberty was not initially made of gold. It is actually made of copper, but in 1986 while restoration, the torch was carefully covered with a thin sheet of 24K gold. That’s how it looks presently.
