History:

Taronga Zoo in Sydney, New South Wales has a long and rich history, dating back to when it first opened its doors in 1916. Originally known as Taronga Park Zoo, it was established as a refuge for a number of native animals that had been threatened as a result of changes to the habitat due to European settlement. It was the first zoo in the world to house all three species of Australian kangaroos in captivity. The zoo was initially owned and managed by the Zoological Society of New South Wales, a voluntary organisation composed of leading individuals from the scientific and natural history communities. Early on, the Society used limited funds to make improvements, such as the restoration of the original tanks and trenches for sea lions, the installation of bird aviaries and bear enclosures, and the addition of native animals including Tasmanian devils, koalas, wombats, dingoes, and more. By the mid-1920s, the animals had become so popular that the Society decided to build a larger and more modern zoo facility. This project was completed in 1928 and it was at this time that the park was renamed Taronga Zoo. Through the years, the zoo has been world-renowned for its conservation and successful breeding of endangered species, such as the Tasmanian devil. In addition, the zoo has become home to more than 4,000 animals from 350 species.
