, Parliament House in Canberra, the Australian Capital Territory, is the meeting place of the Parliament of Australia, comprising the House of Representatives and the Senate. Parliament House was designed by the architect Romaldo Giurgola from Australia and opened in 1988. It is the world's fifth-largest parliament building and features materials such as 120,200 tonnes of Canberra granite and marble, 500,000m³ of earth and more than 21,000m² of roof. The Parliament House site has a long history associated with the Australian Government, going all the way back to 1911, when Canberra was declared the national capital. The first parliament house for the new capital was begun in 1927 but was never finished. In 1959, the Australian Government established the National Capital Development Commission to oversee important national projects in the Canberra region. The NCDC then set out to construct a new and permanent Parliament House in the area, and the site chosen was at the foot of Capital Hill. Construction tender for the new building was awarded in 1982 before the foundation stone was laid by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1982. Construction was completed in 1988, and the House of Representatives and the Senate first met in the new building in April of that year. In 1988, the building was opened by Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
