Worship Method:
Huazang Temple is a Buddhist temple located in northern China, on the East side of the Wutai Mountain. The Temple is home to a variety of religious practices, including mantras, prayers and rituals, intended to bring peace and protection to the visitors. The methods of worship in Huazang Temple vary depending on the type of visit, however, in general, Buddhists approach the temple with respect and reverence. The main practice employed in Huazang Temple is kōan (Hegyō or Ningyō), a traditional Zen Buddhist contemplation. During a visit, monks or nuns will prepare candles and incense and explain the practice of kōan to visitors. To gain insight during contemplative kōan practice, visitors are told to focus on the sound of their breathing and to pay attention to specific questions that appear within their consciousness. Another important practice of worship in Huazang Temple is reciting mantras and prayers. This practice is intended to bring blessings from the Buddhas and bodhisattvas to all sentient beings. Mantras, such as “Om Mani Padme Hum”, are often used in meditation, or as part of daily prayers. Additionally, visitors are encouraged to recite sutras, or Buddhist scriptures, to learn the teachings of the Buddha and deepen their understanding of the religion. Finally, visitors are also encouraged to engage in respectful rituals such as prostrations or circumambulations. Prostrations involve kneeling or bowing down in a gesture of reverence to a statue of the Buddha or other holy objects within the temple. Circumambulating is the practice of walking or moving around something in a clockwise motion, again as an act of reverence. This most visited temple in China
